WHEN IS FALL PROTECTION NEEDED?
Background:
Jeb was 35 years old and a carpenter with 10 years experience in the construction
industry. His company did not have a training or a safety program, leaving
employees to fend for their own safety.
Personal Characteristics:
Jeb's supervisor considered him the type of employee who did not require
a lot of supervision.
Accident:
Jeb's primary specialty was installing roof trusses. His boss used a crane
to lift the trusses into place while Jeb's crew nailed it in. As the trusses
were readied, Jeb stood on a ceiling joist approximately 15' high without
fall protection. While the crane operator was lowering the rafter, the
wind blew it into Jeb and knocked him to the ground.
Injury:
Jeb landed on his head and severely fractured his skull. He is currently
living on a life support system.
Unsafe Act/Conditions:
Jeb failed to use fall protection while installing roof trusses.
Preventive Measure(s):
‡ OSHA Regulation 1926, Subpart M, Fall Protection, requires fall protection
for personnel when they are exposed to fall hazards 6' or higher.
