TARPING SAFETY TIPS
Each year, hundreds of truck drivers are injured from falls while tarping
loads. These injuries can be very serious, sometimes resulting in paralysis
and death. In every case, these falls could have been prevented. Below
are just a few tips to help get you home safely.
Whenever possible, avoid standing on the load while tarping. Mechanical
tarping, (such as roll-tops) which allows you to tarp while standing on
the ground, is the best choice for dump trailers and open-top vans. For
lowboys and flatbeds, fixed tarping catwalks & platforms are a great
solution. Old worn-out flatbeds with good decks can be easily converted
into tarping platforms by adding handrails and steps.
If you must climb and stand on the trailer or load, never climb up on
the tires or from the side of the trailer. Use a ladder or the steps and
handrails of the truck to climb safely. Remember to use the three-point
rule while climbing:
1. Wear ankle-supporting work boots with slip-resistant soles.
2. Use lightweight tarps when available and step carefully.
3. Don't struggle - always get help whenever possible. Two people can
tarp better than one.
Trying to second guess the weather is another common mistake. Take your
time and tarp your load before leaving the yard and while in an area protected
from wind, such as inside or behind a building. Never stop to tarp on
the side of a busy highway. This usually means having to rush the job,
and rushing can cause falls and other accidents. Also, the wind from oncoming
traffic can be deadly, turning a tarp into a parasail.
Most people have accidents because they have taken chances more than
once and gotten away with it. After a while, it no longer seems dangerous,
so taking a risk becomes normal. Cemeteries are full of people who had
only one accident.
